General Membership Meeting recently featured John Thorington, Senior Director of Communications and Board Coordination for the Tampa Port Authority. We found out that the Port of Tampa is Florida's largest and most diversified seaport, and handled nearly 38 million tons of cargo and almost 803,000 passengers in 2009. John had a very impressive presentation.
The Sheriff's Department was represented at a recent meeting of the Bay Crest Park Civic Association to outline a citizen program indicating that they were giving special attention to Bay Crest, Dana Shores, and Twelve Oaks and were hopeful these areas would have some residents interested enough to commit to the program and a mandated training program. Any interested parties should call 813 247 8223 ,813 247 8115 or visit their website of www.hcso.tampa.fl.us. Why was the VCCP created? 1. To reduce crime 2.To improve the safety of our citizens 3. To improve the quality of life within Hillsborough County 4.To enhance our relationship with the community. 5. To allow community members to become active participants in the process of crime control and prevention. Who can volunteer? 1. US Citizens. 2 19 years of age or older. 3. Possess a valid driver's license. 4. Must pass a screening process. 5 Must complete the VCCP Training Academy given by the Hillsborough County Sheriff Office. 6 Must be willing to attend monthly meetings. 7 Must be willing to volunteer a minimum 6 hours per month You might want to contact the Sheriffs Office for addition information. Sounds like a good program where a retired military person might want to participate.
